When you take a screenshot of a story on Instagram, the original uploader won't be notified at all. This means that if somebody you are following be they a friend, a family member or even a celebrity publicly shares a post, you will be able to take a screenshot of it before it disappears, and they will be none the wiser.

The same is true if you want to keep a visual record of another person's Twitter or Facebook posts, as they won't receive notifications from those apps either. It is worth bearing in mind that Instagram does update quite frequently and so this may not always be the case. If you receive a normal picture, video or text DM on Instagram, then you will be able to take a screenshot of it without the original sender being alerted.

Yet if you are sent one of Instagram's disappearing messages which are temporary photos or videos that are captured within the app itself then taking a screenshot of this will trigger a notification for the other party.

However, the exception to this rule is if you screenshot a vanishing photo, video, or message on Instagram. If you screenshot the Vanishing DM, the other user will get a notification. In order to turn on this feature, you must go to your Instagram DMs and choose the chat you want to enable Vanish Mode on. Click on the chat and tap the info circle in the top right. So screenshotting from the messenger part of the app is the only time people will receive a notification.
