The rest of the hardware is as good as new and I see no reason why it wont last a good few years more. Most of the PVR's that I have heard about that no longer work are due to poor design making updates to the Freeview service not work on them. Or power surges or lightning strikes causing physical damage, but these are rare and could damage any equipment, not just a PVR.

My simplistic understanding was that replacement of the hard-drive should be dead easy. You wouldn't throw your car away because the head-gasket had blown, why would you throw away your PVR because the hard-drive died?
